According to the World Happiness Report (2024), Finland is the happiest country in the world. Finnish people tend to be surprised by this because, like other countries in the world, many of us also experience depression, pain, sadness. What happiness means and entails is not universal. Happiness is usually what we make of it, alone and together with others.

Carpe Diem in Latin means that we should enjoy life while we can. This phrase is widely known as Seize the Day! in English. In this exhibition, I focus on the happiness of life in all its complexities and simplicities. The most encouraging person in my life is my grandmother. She is an incredibly amazing and inspiring storyteller who can captivate anyone with her ‘happy stories’, urging people to think about themselves and the world around them. She taught me how to enjoy life while I can, reminding me constantly that happiness is never fully ‘happy’. She also often maintained that my happiness might not be other people’s sense of happiness.

In a similar vein, all the art pieces contained in this exhibition aim to make the visitor think about what it is that makes them happy in life, focusing on simple things like a colour, music, flowers and mountains, favourite clothes, beautiful objects but also encounters with different kinds of people. The exhibition is a realistic celebration of life and joy urging us to look at the small things and relationships that we enjoy while we can (Carpe Diem). The working principle of the exhibition is that happiness is a very unstable and unpredictable process, which needs cherishing and reflecting on all the time.

Three sections compose the exhibition: 1. Inner peace and tranquility, 2. Simple pleasures, 3. Gentle interactions. Every art piece represents a happy and yet intricate story. The pieces, based on different artistic techniques, date from 2020-2024 and showcase my constant interests in both scientific thought about humanity, identity and interculturality, and artistic expressions of them. While lookingat each art piece, I recommend connecting your own life as well as intellectual experiences to what you perceive in the pieces. Let’s enjoy a happy and complex life together!
